Stentor Celebrates 125 years in the Music Business
Surrey based company, The Stentor Music Company, were recognised and presented with the NAMM Milestone Award this year at Winter NAMM.
Stentor originated when Edward Chapman Doughty, a young music graduate and violinist started The Harmonic Publishing Company publishing popular music of the day, including some of his own compositions. As the publishing business developed, Doughty moved the business to York Road Wandsworth which was known as Doughty & Co. In 1895 he registered the name Stentor for strings, rosin and violins that were sold as ‘Stentor’.
In recognition of this long history, Stentor was honoured with the NAMM Milestone Award for 125 years’ service to the music products industry. Luke Doughty and Liz Wilkes, directors of Stentor and great-grandchildren of Edward C. Doughty, received the award at a presentation at the NAMM Show by NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond.
The Milestone Awards are presented annually to industry leaders who have reached a noteworthy anniversary, putting Stentor on the list of companies who continue to flourish in today’s challenging music business.
Today the 4th generation of the Doughty family still owns and runs the company and Stentor has grown to become a leading manufacturer of orchestral stringed instruments and an established musical instrument distributor throughout the world. Later this year also marks 25 years since Michael Doughty first established Stentor’s wholly-owned Stentor factory in China.
