Iceland’s Moombix Raises £1.9mn Seed Funding To Launch And Enter The UK Market

The funding round will be used to scale Moombix’s online music learning platform, connecting adult learners with music teachers and musicians worldwide, with expertise in various fields and disciplines of music – from learning to play instruments, DJ-ing, and voice as well as performance, production, and publishing

Reykjavik, Iceland, Moombix (www.moombix.com), a music education platform enabling adult hobbyists and those with professional aspirations to have one-on-one online classes with expert teachers – offering instrument learning, voice coaching, DJing, as well as production and publication – today announces closing a seed funding round of over £1.9 million, led by Iceland’s Frumtak Ventures with participation from angel investors.

The investment will be used to scale the Moombix marketplace and improve user experience, accelerate customer acquisition, and prepare for a strategic launch into the UK, a territory in which it already has nearly 200 teachers signed-up to offer classes.

Moombix’s long-term sustainable growth will be fueled by consistently onboarding talented teachers and musicians from a diverse range of musical disciplines. By expanding Moombix´s offerings and enhancing the student experience, the company aims to provide a top-tier, personalised learning platform for its growing global community.

Moombix was founded by professional musician and entrepreneur Margret Juliana Sigurdardottir, who has performed with fellow Icelanders Björk and Sigur Rós. Moombix is her second music-tech startup, which she founded in 2022 after successfully exiting from her first startup award winning Mussila.

Moombix approaches music learning as a lifestyle, encouraging adults to pursue it for personal growth and fulfilment, much like learning a language or practising yoga. Traditional music education often presents challenges such as location, scheduling, and access to specialised skills, especially for those with busy lifestyles. Moombix removes these barriers by offering flexible, one-on-one lessons with expert teachers, making music education accessible to everyone.

As Moombix enters its next phase of growth, the company aims to expand its user base by attracting qualified teachers and students from every location. Moombix teachers already include respected musicians such as: Biggi Þóris (MD of the Icelandic National Theatre), Richard Bedford (Grammy nominated British singer-songwriter), Andrew Morgan (long-term collaborator with Neil Davidge of Massive Attack and global music lecturer), and Steve Riggs (DJ and producer who has worked with Sony, Armada Music, and deadmau5).

The team will also continue to develop the platform’s technical infrastructure – which already includes its proprietary video conferencing tool, its streamlined payment processing system and other digital tools that are tailored for live online music lessons.

Moombix co-founder and CEO Margret Juliana Sigurdardottir: “As an experienced professional musician and music teacher, I’ve witnessed first-hand how difficult it can be to access flexible, high-quality music lessons. Traditional lessons are designed for school-age children, which leaves adults with limited options. Moombix changes that. We’re not just offering lessons; we’re making music education a lifestyle choice – something that can fit seamlessly into your day, just like a yoga class or any other hobby. We’re excited to embark on the next step of our journey, building a global community of music enthusiasts, where aspiring musicians can connect with expert teachers from all around the world, anytime, anywhere. Frumtak Ventures’ support is invaluable as this funding will help us not just grow but engage both teachers and users, as well as establish Moombix as the go-to platform for music education worldwide.”

Frumtak Ventures partner Andri Heidar Kristinsson: “Frumtak Ventures is thrilled to support Moombix as the company embarks on its first major global push. Their focus on quality educators, combined with an intuitive platform, positions them to be a leader in the global music education space. We have been impressed with the platform’s flexibility to appeal to not only students but also professional musicians, experienced music teachers, and newly graduated musicians who can set their own schedules and teach from anywhere. Moombix has the potential to revolutionise how people connect and learn, and we’re excited to join them on their mission of making music education accessible to all.”
