Rory Gallagher’s amp and other stars’ guitars up for auction
A 1960 Magnatone 190 amplifier, formerly owned and used in the studio by legendary Irish blues guitarist Rory Gallagher, is likely to be one of the high points of an auction of vintage musical instruments at Gardiner Houlgate auctions rooms at Corsham, near Bath on 15th June.
The amp, which comes with full provenance, is one of nearly 500 items including rare guitars, acoustic and electric plus amplifiers and effects, being sold by Mark Griffiths, formerly the guitarist with Matthews Southern Comfort (of ‘Woodstock’ fame) and a regular with Hank Marvin among many other illustrious names. The guitar played by Griffiths on ‘Woodstock’ is included in the auction along with a 1969 Gibson Les Paul Standard electric guitar, formerly owned by Greg Lake. Also in the sale are a variety of bass guitars that Mark used live and in the studio, with Cliff Richard, Hank Marvin, The Shadows and the Everly Brothers.
