Learn to Play Day coming next weekend!
The momentum behind this year’s Learn To Play Day (17th & 18th March) seems to have really gathered pace recently, with retailers across the country, large and small, pledging their support and taking part. The organising team at the MIA/Music For All meanwhile, has been arranging social media and web-based publicity, a drive which now includes the listing of all events on ‘Where Can We Go’ – a UK community events site where the public can search for things to do by date, postcode and type of event: https://www.wherecanwego.com/
Other promotional activities are planned to include listing on All Gigs, MumsNet, Skiddle, Music List & Whats Happening as well as Indie London, London At Large, London & Partners and The Standard for the London LTPD events and all LTPD events are also now listed on Get Creative https://getcreativeuk.com/#/-
Both music store chains, Musicroom and PMT, are fully backing Learn to Play Day. At Musicroom Salisbury there will be guitar lessons, in Stratford guitar and piano lessons and in Edinburgh visitors can ‘Join Our Band’ and learn how to play together. Meanwhile, in Nottingham Musicroom will be offering woodwind lessons and guitar maintenance tips, in Exeter, guitar and drum lessons, and in Lincoln keyboard and ukulele lessons. Whilst in York, Chris Stanbury from Casio will be offering one to one training, lessons and tips.
PMT has joined forces with Rocksteady Music School to deliver an array of activities in its stores. Highlights include drum lessons with Pete Salisbury (The Charlatans, The Verve), Mike Heaton (Embrace) and Donald Johnson (A Certain Ratio) at PMT Manchester, and DJ’ing and mixing workshops at PMT London. Rocksteady tutors will be in PMT store in Birmingham, Bristol, Northampton, Nottingham, Oxford, Portsmouth and Southend. Other stores will have favourite local tutors offering a variety of instrument and vocal lessons as well as instrument manufacturer representatives.
Beyond retail chains, the range of planned events is wide raging. A drop-in event is being held by Skipton Community Orchestra where all are welcome to an open rehearsal and free taster lessons on a range of instruments. Vale Pianos will be making music with a giant keyboard. Interflux band members Ben Saunders & Conor Page will be at Music Bunker helping with free musical instrument taster lessons. Millers Music is putting on the biggest music lesson in Cambridge with a Harmonica Playathon, while at Dawkes Music participants can find out how to be a sax superstar or learn to play some clarinet classics. Forsyths is offering free music taster lessons as is River Studios, and Croydon Guitar Tuition is offering free guitar lessons. Yamaha Music London will be offering £100 off vouchers on the Yamaha Music London Selfie Stage, while in Newcastle, JG Windows is promoting free lessons, as is Fairdeal Music, in Birmingham. Encouragingly, many of these events are being widely promoted on social media to achieve maximum exposure and Music For All reports that some stores’ events are already solidly booked.
