“You can get a great sound out of any amp that works”: Whitesnake’s Doug Aldrich explains why having a good guitar is more important than a good amp

If you’ve got a limited budget, are you more likely to spend more on your guitar or amp? It’s a question that plagues anyone looking to build a rig, but Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich reckons he has the answer.
In an interview in the latest print edition of Guitarist, Aldrich explains that shelling out more on your guitar will pay dividends over doing the same for your amplifier.

“I’d rather have a really good guitar and a cheap amp,” he says. “I spend a lot of time playing acoustically, and I really get off on the way the guitar feels and sounds acoustically.
“I think you can get a great sound out of any amp that works; you can get a sound that’s going to be cool. And if you have a nice guitar, you’re going to be passionate about what you play – and your fingers and your heart determine the sound anyway.”
Doug Aldrich is just the latest guitarist to weigh in on whether it’s more important to have a good guitar or a good amp. Last month, Covet’s Yvette Young had the opposite opinion, instead asserting that it’s better to spend your budget on a better-quality amp.
The math-rock master explained that having a poor amp has the ability to mess with your tone. “It’s like ruining a really nice audio file with… I don’t know.. Something that’s going to degrade it a lot,” she said. “There’s no point, right? I’d rather go for the expensive amp.”
She went on: “‘Cheap guitar’ doesn’t mean bad guitar. I have plenty of guitars that are cheap, but I feel like they still sound really impressive for the price point.”
Ultimately, choosing to spend more on your guitar or amp is a personal decision, and depends heavily on what experience you’re looking for. Which are you – team guitar or team amp?
