“Why would I when I can play real guitar?”: Eric Clapton has apparently never played an air guitar
It’s a sad day for the air guitar community with the revelation that Eric Clapton, the legend himself, has never once played an imaginary axe.
That’s right, while many of us have spent years perfecting our air guitar solos in front of bathroom mirrors and at rock concerts, Clapton has been busy actually playing the real thing.

In the latest issue of Metal Hammer magazine, British Comedian Frank Skinner recounts the “interesting” conversation he once had with Slowhand at one of his shows on the topic of air guitars.
“I asked him if he played air guitar. He said, ‘Why would I when I can play real guitar?’”
“It was like, Eric… you don’t understand,” Skinner replies. “Air guitar isn’t to be dismissed like that – in a world where very few people you meet believe in the unseen, air guitar is the last vestige of belief.”
That said, despite his lack of interest in air guitar, Clapton remains one of the most revered musicians in rock history – even if not everyone is sold on his guitar chops. The man has strummed his way through decades of blues, rock, and everything in between, and just recently wrapped up his 2024 Americas Tour at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl.
In other news, Eric Clapton has described the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a “frat boys club”, noting that it isn’t “a place for rebels” the likes of Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers.
While he’s been inducted three times – the first and only musician to achieve that accolade – Clapton makes it clear that he isn’t all that happy with some of the organisation’s decisions.
“The fact that someone like J.J. has never even been suggested is proof of what that thing is or proof of what it isn’t. It’s not like he’ll ever come up. It’s not their thing. I don’t know what their thing is. But he’s too anonymous for those guys,” he says.
