“When you hear someone say they’ve lost everything in a fire, this is much of that everything”: John Mayer shares heartfelt message following LA wildfires

John Mayer has shared a touching post to Instagram as wildfires continue to cause devastation across Los Angeles.
At the time of reporting, five fires are continuing to rage across LA. More than 10,000 buildings have been destroyed, and 10 people are believed to have lost their lives. 179,000 people were ordered to evacuate, with hundreds of thousands more placed on evacuation warning, meaning they could be ordered to flee at any time.
As the tragedy continues, many are distraught by having lost precious belongings to the blazes. In his social media post, Mayer shares a photo of a single folder containing photos of his father. He describes it as “the most valuable thing I own”.
“It’s the only evidence of his life that will exist over time. These are the ‘documents’ you read about people taking from their homes. When you hear someone say they’ve lost everything in a fire, this is much of that everything, if not all of it,” he states.
“Those who say they’ll be okay still have their folders and their albums. Those who are inconsolable have lost them. Just behind the immeasurable loss of life is the loss of the proof of life. I don’t practice prayer but tonight I will say one for everyone who no longer has these items. It’s not about the art and the collectibles. It’s the photos, the letters, the class rings, the eyeglasses and the things we keep to remind us that those we loved were here.”
He concludes, “May those who have lost so much find some semblance of hope and support from their family and friends. Stay safe, look out for yourself and for one another, and trust that humanity and all it entails, though sometimes hard to see, is alive and well. This is truly devastating.”

Also among those to speak out on the fires is Joe Bonamassa. Following one of the break outs near his home museum, Nerdville  in Laurel Canyon, Bonamassa also shared a post to Instagram which showed his collection of vintage and rare gear stored away inside a garage.
In the caption he wrote, “It’s not in my hands anymore. A very hard place to be as a curator. It’s my lifetime of work. I knew this day would come eventually but just not today. So far so good tonight but the situation is very fluid. A major thanks to the firefighters and first responders for giving it their all these past few days. Stay safe Los Angeles… These are uncertain and unprecedented times.”

Bonamassa has since shared a second update confirming the safety of both himself and the security his gear. He has once again sent out his gratitude to the LA fire department, who are continuing to put their lives at risk to tackle the fires, and has sent love to those who have lost their homes.
