“When I’m playing at Hell Fest to 80,000 drunk people at midnight, god I love them”: Bad Religion’s Brian Baker on why he switched to a Kemper
Bad Religion’s Brian Baker has explained why he now prefers to use a Kemper when playing live, as opposed to his old Marshall amplifiers.
Baker joins a growing list of guitarists making the switch to modellers for their portability and convenience when on the road. From Heriot to Chris Shiflett and even Tony Iommi – Kempers and Quad Cortex’s are cropping up more and more, with much positive praise about their profiling capabilities.

Speaking to Ultimate Guitar, Baker explains, “I was never an amp guy. I had old Marshalls only because I’m of a certain age and I had Marshalls that I bought in the ‘80s. That was just always my thing – the amp was a Marshall, and the guitar was how I got different sounds. I didn’t understand Fender amps, that you had to turn them all the way up, that the small ones sounded better.
“The Kemper came into play obviously as a convenience. But when I profiled my first Marshall, it sounded identical. I couldn’t tell the difference. Once I got out in the wild, I see that yes, you’re missing just a little cream, just a little bloom. I can’t control the feedback the same way. But these are such minor details when I’m playing at Hell Fest to 80,000 drunk people at midnight, god [I] love them.”
He later adds, “I’ve just chosen to make this commitment for the good of the team. It sounds great to me, I still don’t think I’d record a record with it. I have the source material.”
Bad Religion are due to play When We Were Young festival in October 2025. You can join the waitlist for tickets now.
