“We’re starting to get our own tone and it’s starting be acknowledged”, says Paul Reed Smith, 40 years after PRS was first founded
Celebrating 40 years of PRS Guitars, company founder Paul Reed Smith hosted a celebratory event at The NAMM Show featuring performances from John Mayer and the Mark Lettieri Group.
Later speaking to gear retailer Andertons for its YouTube channel, Smith reflected on the progress PRS has made so far across its four-decade spanning business, stating that he now feels his instruments are just getting recognised for their “own tone”.

“We’re starting up the beginning of PRS having its own sound,” Paul says [via Ultimate Guitar]. “So, there’s sounds of Les Pauls, there’s sounds of Strats and Sounds of Teles, and maybe there’s a side table of SGs and Gretches and this and the other, Danelectros… But we’re starting to get our own tone and it’s starting to be acknowledged.”
He later adds, “And the party last night was about that. There weren’t Tele tones or…Well, there might have been some Strat tones, maybe. Really beautiful ones. John’s solo in Gravity last night was spectacular. There’s only twelve notes and I don’t know what notes those were.”
John Mayer famously switched over from Fender to PRS, and has become synonymous with its Silver Sky model. During the PRS event, Mayer also gave a speech in which he said, “How did PRS make it to 40 years? Number one, they make great guitars… You talk about PRS and some say, ‘They’re too nice.’ Yeah, they’re really fucking nice!
“What’s too nice for a guitar? You want that special vibe that only tuning every song can give you onstage? You want that grit, just like your heroes? Bad intonation?! The guitars are incredible, the product is incredible.”
