“We were told we were going to be one-hit wonders”: Mark Tremonti on the doubt Creed faced in their early career

Mark Tremonti has opened up on the doubt that Creed faced as they were growing as a band. According to the guitarist and vocalist, they were even told they’d be “one-hit wonders”.
Creed made their debut in the rock scene with their first album, My Own Prison, which landed in 1997 and went on to be certified x6 platinum in the USA. They’ve since been nominated for Grammy Awards twice, and have a number of accolades to their name, but that didn’t stop them from getting any hate.

Speaking to Guitar Interactive Magazine, Tremonti recalls, “Throughout our early careers with Creed, we were always told that we were going to be either one-hit wonders or have one hit record, and everybody’s always telling us that it was impossible to do the things that we were going to do.”
He adds, “I know I was always fighting for survival, and always just worried that one day I would not be able to write songs for a profession anymore. It always scared the hell out of me. When we came out with the second record, when that first song came out, and the response to it was huge, that made me feel a little more secure in our career. It did very well.”
Despite proving their early doubters wrong, the band still went on to face further negativity upon the release of 1999’s Human Clay. “People were saying, ‘Yeah, that will be your sophomore slump.’ The second record came out and did way better than the first record. Oh, yeah. In this business, the more success sometimes you have, the more you have people trying to say it’s not going to continue. So we had to fight and fight to stay alive back then.”
Even now, this attitude is still present. One example of this Tremonti gives is the reception to Taylor Swift and her huge success: “You see it time and time again, the most obvious thing you see now is… Not that we were ever as big, but Taylor Swift gets on TV and everybody wants us to poke jabs and she’s selling out stadiums at the same time,” he explains.
