“We were scandalised”: Ann and Nancy Wilson once walked out of a Led Zeppelin show as Robert Plant was being too suggestive

Back in the ’60s, Robert Plant lived by the mantra of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll – but not everyone enjoyed his provocative machismo. Heart’s Nancy Wilson has revealed that her and her older sister, Ann Wilson, were so appalled by Plant’s raunchy lyrics that they once walked out of a 1969 Led Zeppelin gig.
In an interview with Premier Guitar’s 100 Guitarists podcast, Nancy recalled her first experience seeing Led Zeppelin perform. Her and Ann attended a show at the Green Lake Aqua Theater in Seattle in May 1969 – but they left after a slew of shockingly suggestive tracks.

“The singer, he’s so suggestive,” Nancy remembers. “He’s got his shirt wide open, he’s got his bare chest, and his jeans were really low riders. He was moving in this way that was super-suggestive and we were kind of shocked. We’re like, ‘Oh, my God.’”
Aged 15 and 19 at the time, it’s no shock the pair were surprised by the more adult themes. “We were in a little folk band at the time,” she adds. “We were from the suburbs. So we were kind of square, square little hippie chicks to be unenlightened, let’s just say. And so, they were like, ‘Oh, they’re so loud. They’re just being so suggestive and loud.’”

The final straw, however, was The Lemon Song, a tongue-in-cheek track about asking for sexual favours. “Then, he sang ‘Squeeze My Lemon,’ and we’re like, ‘Oh, we must leave, we must leave the premises,’ because we were just shocked!” she explains. “We actually walked out… We were scandalised, and we walked away.”
