“We were like a couple of naughty school kids”: Zakk Wylde reveals he once snuck off to a bathroom with Ozzy Osbourne so they could drink beer in secret without Sharon Osbourne finding out
Rockstars may live by their own rules, but even they aren’t above sneaking around now and then, especially when Sharon Osbourne is keeping watch.
In a new interview with Metal Hammer, Zakk Wylde shares a story about the time he and Black Sabbath legend Ozzy Osbourne orchestrated a stealthy beer run – complete with a secret rendezvous in a bathroom stall – just to avoid getting caught by Sharon.

Asked about his most “wholesome moment” with The Prince of Darkness, Wylde says, “I remember we played the Budokan [Arena] in Tokyo. I’d always have a bag of beer with me, just in case anywhere we were going didn’t have beer.”
“So, Oz comes in the room after the gig. He goes ‘Zakky, Zakky… you got any beers?’ I go, ‘Yeah, but I’m not giving you one here. You’re going to get us fired! Mum’s [Sharon Osbourne] right across the hall – she’s going to come and see the two of us drinking, is that going to be good?’”
“He goes, ‘Alright, tell you what, I’ll meet you in the bathroom.’ So I go in the bathroom, I’m waiting. All of a sudden, I hear the door open,” the guitarist continues. “He comes in the stall right next to me, and I push a Kirin or Asahi under there. I hear the ’psssst’ of the can, then ‘glug, glug, glug!’ He downs it in one, puts the can down, pushes it back under and goes, ‘Thanks, Zakk. I’ll see you at dinner.’”
“We were like a couple of naughty school kids!” Wylde admits. “It was hilarious!”
Wild Ozzy antics aside, the musician also had plenty to say about the next generation of guitar heroes.
When asked who he thinks is the best up-and-coming guitarist right now, Wylde didn’t hesitate: “There’s this young kid called Taj Farrant, hold on…” he says, pulling out his phone to show a video of the teenage prodigy in action. “Look at this! It’s not just that he’s fast, he has complete control of the instrument, he’s got soul. He’s phenomenal and, you know what, he’s 15 years old! It’s ridiculous!”
Wylde isn’t the only one impressed by Farrant’s talent. The 15-year-old Australian blues-rock prodigy has also caught the attention of Nuno Bettencourt, who has gone as far as to call him the reincarnation of Eddie Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaughan combined.
“Yes, the internet is littered with great players, especially jaw dropping technical players. But rarely, do you get that technical prowess that shoots straight through the heart with pure emotion,” the Extreme virtuoso said.
