When you get an invite to participate in what’ll likely be one of the biggest concerts in the history of heavy metal, how do you possibly turn it down?
Ghost’s Tobias Forge was faced with that very question when he and his squad of Nameless Ghouls were asked by Ozzy and the Black Sabbath clan to perform at their upcoming Back to the Beginning concert in Birmingham, England.

The only issue was that Ghost’s forthcoming North American Skeletour is due to kick off in the week following the Back to the Beginning show on 5 July.
“We were asked to partake [in the Sabbath concert], and we couldn’t,” Forge explains in the new issue of Metal Hammer.
Ultimately, the opportunity was too great to pass up, so Forge opted to perform at the show on his own, rather than with his band.
“So it ended up being like, ‘OK, so we’ll just send our singer!’ That was agreed in a heartbeat, some time ago.”
In the following months, when it came time to announce the show’s lineup, Forge was asked how he should be billed.
“What do we say?” he was asked, to which he replied: “Well, his name is Papa V Perpetua. So write that!”
Image has always been a key component of Ghost’s allure – and with each album cycle comes new outfits and names. For the band’s upcoming sixth album Skeletá – and accompanying Skeletour – Forge will don the mantle of Papa V Perpetua, sporting purple regalia and an ever-gothic aesthetic.
Black Sabbath’s Back to the Beginning show takes place 5 July at Villa Park. Ghost’s new album Skeletá arrives 25 April.
