“We could use AI to make David and Roger be friends again”: Nick Mason is open to using AI to create new Pink Floyd music
Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason is open to using AI to create new songs for the band. In fact, the drummer believes the results would be “fascinating” to hear.
Speaking to The Sunday Mirror, Mason says that artificial intelligence could potentially bridge the gap created by the long-standing rift between David Gilmour and former member Roger Waters – by generating new music as if the bassist had never left.

“It would be fascinating to see what AI could do with new music,” he says. “If you tried to run it as a sort of ‘Where did Pink Floyd go after?’”
“The thing to do would be to have an AI situation where David and Roger become friends again. We could be like ABBA by the time we’ve finished with it.”
During the interview, Mason also discussed the feud between Gilmour and Waters, expressing disappointment at how it has overshadowed the band’s achievements and good times between the members.
“In a 55-year career, most of it was great fun,” he says. “We were enormously privileged to be in a successful band and tour the world and hang out with really interesting people. It’s a gold card to meet all sorts of your favourite sportsmen and actors.”
Despite Mason’s openness to AI-generated music, his enthusiasm may not resonate with fans of Pink Floyd. The band previously faced backlash after selecting an AI-generated video as one of the winners in their Dark Side of the Moon 50th anniversary animation competition.
The move was criticised by one fan as a “spit in the face of actual artists who poured their heart and soul into each frame of work they made and submitted for this competition,” while many expressed their frustrations at how “a band with almost 60 years of history creating art” is supposedly “fucking over actual artists and rewarding this slop”.
