Watch Post Malone perform Smells Like Teen Spirit with surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic
Smells like another Nirvana reunion… Following on from their surprise performance at January’s FireAid benefit concert, the surviving members of Nirvana decided to knock out one more performance this past weekend – and they asked Post Malone to hop in on vocals.
Introduced by comedian Adam Sandler as “Post Nirvana”, the group performed Smells Like Teen Spirit during Saturday Night Live’s 50th Anniversary celebrations at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

While the FireAid reunion show saw the Nirvana members playing a string of hits alongside St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett and Dave Grohl’s daughter Violet, their SNL50 set only saw them playing one track with Post Malone.
Throughout, everyone looks to be in their element. Grohl proves that, despite his main gig these days fronting Foo Fighters, he’s still a drummer at heart. Elsewhere, Krist Novoselic thrums on his Gibson Signature RD bass and Pat Smear gleefully provides the rhythm guitar, while Malone valiantly strives to do Kurt Cobain justice.
It’s not the first time Post Malone has shared his love for Nirvana. Back in 2020, he performed a set of Nirvana covers in aid of The United Nations Foundation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO. The charity livestream even received the approval of Kurt Cobain’s ex-wife, Courtney Love, who took to Instagram to share her approval prior to the event, giving a nod of “good luck, Mr. Malone.”
Post also worked alongside a string of rock and metal icons in his time. Not only did his charity live-stream see him working alongside Blink-182’s Travis Barker, but he also performed with the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Grammys in 2019.
Notably, Malone has even worked with the Prince of Darkness himself: Ozzy Osbourne. He chased Osbourne to work on his 2019 track, Take What You Want, and it even reignited the Black Sabbath frontman’s love for making music. Osbourne also repaid the favour, asking Malone to feature on his 2020 track, It’s A Raid.
“I’d never even heard of this kid,” Osbourne told The Sun at the time. “He wanted me to sing on his song… and then one thing led to another. I started recording a new album with Post Malone’s producer Andrew Watt. It’s only nine tracks but it was a catalyst to get me to where I am today… up until making [2020’s Ordinary Man], I thought I was dying. But that got me off my arse.”
So, in a way, Malone helped out with a Nirvana reunion, and can probably be thanked for the huge Black Sabbath reunion this July. Not too shabby, Posty.
