Watch Jason Isbell perform Something More Than Free at the DNC

The lead up to 2024’s Democratic National Convention has been quite the rollercoaster. With a brand new presidential nominee fronting the party, this year’s DNC has marked Kamala Harris’ official selection as the Democratic Party’s nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
Following Joe Biden’s surprise withdrawal from the 2024 US presidential race last month, Vice President Harris has since been elected to run in his stead. Plenty of artists have showed their support – including Americana star Jason Isbell.

A suited-and-booted Isbell made an appearance at the DNC to perform his 2015 hit Something More Than Free, a track about finding meaning in hard work. Playing a Fender Telecaster through a combo amp, Isbell was backdropped by a large US flag for the performance. At the end of the song, he gives a shout-out to the delegation from Alabama – his home state.
Isbell has long been a vocal Democrat, and has often shown his musical support for the  party. In 2021, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit released the feature-heavy charity record Georgia Blue. The album was a celebration of Joe Biden’s victory in the traditionally Republican state. Isbell’s performance at the DNC asserts his continued support of the Democratic party, a nod of approval in support of Harris’ selection.

Other artists also performed on the night to show their support. Country and R&B star Mickey Guyton made an appearance, singing her 2021 track All American. Folk rocker James Taylor also performed his own classic track, You’ve Got A Friend.
Elsewhere, other artists have shown their support of Harris too; experimental indie rocker Bon Iver performed patriotic track Battle Cry of Freedom at a Wisconsin rally earlier this month.
