Watch: Iron Maiden’s Janick Gers accidentally flings his guitar into the audience
At the San Antonio leg of Iron Maiden’s Legacy of the Beast tour last Wednesday, Janick Gers’ trademark guitar showmanship backfired – while swinging his guitar around with one hand, Gers lost his grip on its neck, sending the Strat sailing into the crowd. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Speaking to Blabbermouth, a fan who was in the audience described the moment: “Janick was twirling his guitar and he lost control of it and it flew off and hit a security guard in the back of the head and upper torso.
“It literally flew about ten feet!! They returned it and you could tell he was apologetic. The security guard was okay but his eyes were the size of golf balls and he was in shock. The security guard wasn’t injured, as it was a grazing blow, but he was clearly shaken for a moment.”
Luckily, Janick’s guitar and the security guard it collided with are in one piece. The video might remind you, however, of the slightly more destructive viral hit the most epic guitar swing fail, where an attempt at a guitar-flip sees the axe sail 15 feet into the air, crashing down behind the stage and splitting in two. It’s just one of many videos demonstrating that you really need to be confident (either in your grip, or your strap-locks) before you go swinging your axe about.
