Walter Becker’s estate auction fetches over $3 million

The Walter Becker estate’s recent auction of hundreds of guitars and amplifiers was the largest collection of musical equipment sold by Julien’s Auctions since its inception. 1,088 items were sold in all, bringing in $3.3 million. The auctions took place on 18 and 19 October, led by auctioneers Daniel Kruse and Zack Krone.
Walter Becker died in 2017 at the age of 67. He co-founded Steely Dan in 1971, co-writing, singing and playing guitar and bass on their records. After Steely Dan broke up in 1981, he worked in record production or a while, working on albums from Michael Franks and Fra Lippo Lippi. 1993 saw the reformation of Steely Dan, and Becker would remain a member until his death. He also contributed to various other musical products throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and recorded two solo albums.
His long career in music saw him build an incredible collection of equipment. As Billboard reports, the highest price was fetched by a green Strat-style guitar – going for $68,750. A lot of the items exceeded their expected values by a significant margin, some going for many thousands more than estimated.
