“USA-made Gibson acoustic craftsmanship at an exceptional value”: Gibson’s new Acoustic Specials reimagine three classic designs at a fraction of the price
Gibson has announced affordable alternatives to three of its classic acoustic guitar designs as part of its Acoustic Specials series.
Forming the lineup are the L-00 Special, J-45 Special, and Hummingbird Special, which, as you might have guessed, reimagine the brand’s L-00, J-45 and Hummingbird blueprints.

All handcrafted in Montana, the trio of Gibson Acoustic Specials bare the same silhouettes as their Standard counterparts, and are constructed with solid mahogany backs, with Sitka spruce tops reinforced with Gibson’s scalloped X-bracing.
The Hummingbird and J-45 Specials come equipped with Grover tuners, with the slimmer L-00 model coming with its usual Grover Mini tuners. There’s also an active preamp and easily accessible soundhole-mounted volume control.
The undersaddle piezo pickup is one of the only places you’ll find an answer to the cheaper cost; LR Baggs VTC pickups have been replaced with LR Baggs Element. It’s a slight downgrade, as the Element leaves you without tone control.
The J-45 Special and Hummingbird Special, meanwhile, have slimmer bodies, with Gibson claiming they offer a “leaner and tighter bass response”, which may be preferred by certain players.
The Hummingbird also comes with the most obvious aesthetic shift; Its iconic pickguard design has been simplified for the Special edition.
While the alterations are slight, the price difference is substantial. A standard L-00 costs £2,949.00, yet the Special model costs just £1,699.00. Similarly, the J-45 Standard falls from £2,799.00 to £1,699.00, and the Hummingbird Standard takes a biggest drop, its usual £3,799 price tag swapped out for a cool £1,899.00.
All three guitars also come in two colours, all sealed with a satin nitrocellulose finish. Both the J-45 and L-00 come in Satin Wine Red and Satin Vintage Sunburst. The Hummingbird comes in the same Satin Wine Red as well as a brighter Vintage Cherry Sunburst option.
“Gibson is very proud to now offer the individual magic of these three authentic and famous Gibson acoustics,” says Robi Johns, Senior Product Development Manager at Gibson Acoustic.“The Gibson Acoustic Specials arrive in a package that’s simply perfect for songwriting and rehearsing, as well as superior for home recording and live performance.”
All three Acoustic Specials are available now and come with a premium soft shell case. Learn more at Gibson.
