TWA’s new Side Step is a tap tempo expression pedal/LFO
Godlyke Distribution’s handbuilt pedal line, TWA, is now taking orders for the Side Step: an independent low-frequency oscillator (LFO) that can control any pedal that supports an expression or a +5V control voltage connector.
The pedal’s small enclosure is home to five main controls: an on/off footswitch, a tap tempo footswitch, a waveform selector, a rate knob and an exp-through switch. How the controls will affect your sound depends on what you have the Side Step attached to.
Say the Side Step is hooked up to a Solid Gold 76 Plus, the filter aspect of which can be controlled by an expression pedal. With the Side Step engaged, the 76 Plus’ filter will oscillate according to either its rate knob or the tap tempo setting, depending on what was used last. The waveform you have selected will govern how it oscillates.
With an expression pedal connected to the Side Step and the exp-through switch engaged, the expression pedal will function as if it was connected directly to the 76 plus (or whatever pedal you have the Side Step connected to), saving you from having to disconnect it and rearrange your setup in order to step in and take manual control.
With an expression pedal connected to the Side Step and the exp-through switch off, the rate of the oscillation will be governed by the expression pedal, rather than the tap tempo or the rate knob.
The idea for the unique pedal came, TWA says, from conversation with Dweezil Zappa, who envisioned a sample/hold function for the TWA Triskelion, a midrange booster that supports expression pedals.

The Side Step lists for $179, and is available to order now. Each unit requires 1-2 business days to be hand-built. More information at godlyke.com.
