In an interview with Forbes, the interview mentions the recent death of original Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, prompting Moore to tell the story of how their paths nearly crossed – and it was just before Jerry Garcia died too.
At the time, the band were preoccupied with their studio endeavours  and thought they’d have another chance to meet Grateful Dead – but it never happened.

“I would have loved to have met him. With Sonic Youth we had a chance to. We started recording and we realized that we were really getting some great takes and we didn’t want to walk away from it and we kept putting it off,” Moore explains.
“All of a sudden it was four a.m. and we were recording and we were spending money on the studio and so we were trying to be responsible to ourselves like, ‘Well, the Dead would understand that we were doing something that was what musicians do. We’ll see them again sometime.’
“It was like two weeks before Jerry [Garcia] died. We never made that connection. The next day our management calls like, ‘How come you didn’t go to the show? They were waiting for you. They wanted to see you guys. They heard all about your band, Sonic Youth, and they wanted to meet you.’ To this day, I regret it. They were way more than a jam band. The Grateful Dead transcended any kind of generalization. They were probably one of the most important bands the world has ever known in the annals of electric music for sure.”
