The Strokes’ hit song that Julian Casablancas can no longer listen to: “If I heard it on the radio, I’d probably turn it off”
Julian Casablancas’ relationship with one of the most popular songs by The Strokes has changed for the worse, as he feels it’s now “dead” to him.
Casablancas has served as their primary songwriter and lead vocalist since their formation in 1998. Though the band has other songs – Reptilia and Someday, for example – which are similarly popular, he’s most sick of Last Nite.

The song was released in 2011 as the second single from their debut album, Is This It. Though not their most streamed track, it was the band’s highest charting single in the UK, peaking at 14, and it earned platinum status.
In a new interview for The Guardian for its Honest Playlist feature, Casablancas selects the track as the song he can no longer listen to: “Last Nite by the Strokes is pretty dead to me. I’m not sure why.
“There are some others like Reptilia, Hard to Explain, Someday, Take It Or Leave it, New York City Cops that are comparable in terms of crowd reaction that I’m not quite as sick of. If I heard it on the radio, I’d probably turn it off,” he states.
Casablancas recently released a new record with his other band, The Voidz. The album, titled Like All Before You, landed in September. Speaking to Mojo, he explained how writing music for the band compared to writing for The Strokes.
“Voidz songs are where my mind has been pushing me, and where I want to go, and where I am. But the ability or capability or muscle memory of writing Strokes-sequel stuff is just always going to be there. When those songs appear, it makes more sense to put them in each category, but it’s not always that clear. But there’s more ‘no-limits’ with The Voidz,” he said.
Like All Before You from The Voidz is available now to buy or stream.
