The Strokes announce in-person gig in support of NYC Democratic mayoral candidate Maya Wiley
Rock band The Strokes have announced a full-capacity in-person gig at Irving Plaza, in support of New York’s Democratic mayoral candidate Maya Wiley. The concert will take place this Saturday (12 June).
To facilitate the concert being run at full capacity, all attendees will be required to verify their vaccination status at the door or be denied entry. As the concert is in support of a political campaign, Campaign Finance Law also requires guests to provide information such as their occupation, employer, and employer’s business address.

Wiley has worked as counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014, Before that, she worked for the NAACP (National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People) Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Open Society Institute. She has recently been endorsed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and if elected would be the first woman to be mayor of New York, and the second Black person.
A statement from the band says: “Join The Strokes & Friends for the first fully vaxxed, full capacity indoor concert in NYC benefitting the Maya Wiley for Mayor campaign! All proceeds go to the fight to elect the first woman mayor of NYC on 22 June.”
The announcement also means that the planned full-capacity gigs by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio will no longer be the city’s first. The two acoustic sets will take place at the Beacon Theatre between 22-23 June. Adults in the audience for those gigs will need to be vaccinated, and those under 16 will require proof of a negative COVID-19 test and be accompanied by a vaccinated adult.
