Bridgers‘ battered Danelectro 56 was listed in an auction by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards and sold to an anonymous buyer yesterday (11 April).
The boygenius musician had smashed the baritone guitar against a stage monitor to close out her solo SNL set, taking off a massive chunk of the instrument’s body in the process. While its pickups and switches appear to be intact, it’s unclear if the guitar still functions.
Anthony Ramos, supervising producer of the GLAAD Media Awards, told Variety the high sum the guitar fetched came as a pleasant surprise.
“I know she has a loyal fan base,” Ramos said. “Saturday night when I went to bed, it was around $18,000, and I was like, ‘That’s a great number!’ I was kind of hoping we would get to 25. Then I woke up and it was 40, then 50, then 80, and finally over 100.”
“I’m so thankful someone wanted to support our work and wanted that guitar so badly.”
The GLAAD Media Awards champions TV, music, film, literature and journalism that demonstrates inclusive representation of the LGBTQ+ community, and the issues their members face.
Bridgers’ guitar smash on live television was a talking point among fans and musicians alike. David Crosby dismissed the act as “pathetic”, prompting Bridgers to call the 79-year-old folk icon a “little bitch”.
