Steve Cradock says he smoked shavings of Jimi Hendrix’s Strat: “We used a page from the Bible as the paper to roll it up with”
Steve Cradock has shared a rather bizarre anecdote involving one of Jimi Hendrix’s Stratocaster guitars. According to the Ocean Colour Scene guitarist, he once smoked shavings of a Hendrix-owned axe using pages from the Bible.
Cradock – who’s also known for playing in Paul Weller’s band – says the guitar was shown to him by Bob Lamb, who owned a studio space and had jammed with Hendrix in the past. The Strat in question was just a shell, so Cradock decided to crumble off some of its wood for (what we can imagine to be) a rather grim joint.

Speaking in an upcoming interview with Guitar World, Cradock is asked about the controversial story: “That’s true,” he begins. “We smoked Jimi Hendrix’s guitar. It was actually a guy called Bob Lamb’s studio. This would have been the 1990 or 1991 era, and it was Bob Lamb who was friends with Trevor Burton [guitarist with The Move].
“He jammed with Jimi Hendrix and was a drummer in Trevor Burton’s band… [and] he had what he claimed to be a black Stratocaster that was owned by Jimi Hendrix. There were no pickups in it; it was just the body of the guitar on his wall. So, I thought it’d be fun to crumble a bit of the wood off and pop it inside a spliff [a joint].”
He goes on to add, “It was just one of those stupid things you do. It seemed funny. And this is probably not good to hear in America, but we used a page from the Bible as the paper to roll it up with. We got a nice verse out of Psalms and skinned-up the guitar.”
Cradock later explains that by smoking the guitar, he didn’t hope to somehow gain any Hendrix magic, adding that the legendary guitarist remains “untouchable”: “We did it because it was stupid, and we thought it would be – and it was – fun.”
In other Hendrix news, a documentary film on his iconic Electric Lady Studios is showing in a number of theatres. You can locate your nearest screening now.
