Slayer’s Kerry King calls this player the most “overlooked” guitarist in metal

Slayer’s Kerry King has revealed the one metal guitarist he believes doesn’t get the recognition they deserve.
During a recent appearance on the Lipps Service With Scott Lipps podcast, King was asked to share his top five guitarists of all time. While the Slayer icon named a few heavy hitters, it was Judas Priest axeman Glenn Tipton’s creative guitar work that really stood out to him.

“Probably my favorite one [of] all time is Glenn Tipton. And I think he’s the most overlooked,” says King. “Cause if you look at the leads he was doing and when he was doing ‘em, he kind of innovated a lot of that stuff.”
The musician’s top five list also included some of the genre’s biggest names: Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, and Eddie Van Halen, with Zakk Wylde rounding out the list.
“I would have a hard time numbering them, but I can come up with five. Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Eddie Van Halen, without question… I’ll go with a super-heavy hitter that’s my bro and say Zakk Wylde,” says King.

The guitarist has often spoken about the influence of Judas Priest on his own playing, especially the band’s two-guitar approach.
“As a young guitar player, I could tell there were two guitars on the recording, and the creativity and early uniqueness of two guitars totally inspired what Slayer became,” he explained in a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone.
In other news, Kerry recently declared that 2025 will mark Slayer’s final run, stating that the band is “never gonna tour again” or “make a record again”. That said, the thrash metal legends are still set to headline September’s Louder Than Life festival, offering one last chance for fans to witness their iconic live performance before they call it a day.
