“She was always willing to confront her inabilities and work on them” Keith Urban explains why he saw Taylor Swift’s huge potential when she supported him in 2009
Before Taylor Swift became the global music icon we know today, she was a rising star opening for major acts, including country legend Keith Urban.
In 2009, the singer-songwriter was still making her mark in the industry, but Urban already saw something special in her — a drive and vision that hinted at the mega-stardom that was to come.
Now, looking back on their encounter in a new Rolling Stone podcast, Urban shares the qualities that made Swift stand out in a sea of emerging artists even then.

When Swift opened for Urban during his 2009 tour, it wasn’t just another act warming up the crowd. For Urban, it was clear she had potential beyond her years: “What she is now, she was that, when she was opening for me,” says the musician.
“Her vision was way off into the future… She sees where she’s going to be, crystal clear. And that’s the kind of thing that helped her navigate through so many waters that would have killed any other artist.”
“So much negativity, so much hatred from people, so much, God, just straight-up shit that she got flung in all directions from people, but she clearly had her sights on the future and her abilities.”
Swift’s commitment to self-improvement also impressed Urban, who notes how the popstar did not shy away from tackling her weaknesses head-on
“What I love about Taylor is she was always willing to confront her inabilities and work on them,” says Urban. “She worked on being a better singer. She worked on being a better performer. She was always a great writer. She worked on all of it… got better and better and better.”
In other news, Keith Urban recently revealed that he’s working with PRS on a new Tele-style electric guitar. The collaboration marks a significant shift for the country star, who has long been associated with Fender guitars throughout his career.
