Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones hasn’t spoken to John Lydon since 2008, says it “wasn’t even worth asking” him about joining their reunion
Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols has spoken out following criticism from the band’s former vocalist John “Johnny Rotten” Lydon about their current reunion shows.
The Pistols – also including original members Glen Matlock and Paul Cook – are now joined by Frank Carter when playing live, which Lydon recently said “annoyed” him, as he referred to their shows as “karaoke”.

Despite such remarks, Jones wishes Lydon “all the best”, though he is happy to keep their distance, and didn’t believe asking Lydon to join them would have been worth it. He tells Rolling Stone AUS/NZ, “We don’t talk. The last time I spoke to him was 2008. But I wish him all the best. I really do. We had a great time when we were young, and it was life-changing for all of us. But after the court case with Pistol it wasn’t even worth asking John [about the reunion tour]. I don’t think he was interested.”
The court case Jones is referring to is their 2021 legal battle over the use of the band’s music in the 2022 biographical miniseries, Pistol. Lydon initially refused to grant permission for the use of their songs in the series, having described it as “disrespectful”, leading to the band suing him (though Jones said it was “the last thing” he wanted to happen).
Late last year, Jones said he “couldn’t be happier” about the band’s reunion sets. “For me, at 69, if it ain’t fun I ain’t doing it,” he told Classic Rock. “And with Frank it’s beyond fun. We get to play those songs, Frank ain’t trying to be John [Lydon], and I couldn’t be happier. Who knows how long we’re gonna go on for. We’ll definitely be touring next year, with the same line-up, and maybe add a few more songs.”
The Sex Pistols and Frank Carter will kick off their tour of New Zealand and Australia in April this year.
