Sammy Hagar thinks Alex Van Halen is “not doing his brother’s musical legacy justice” by ignoring the Van Hagar era of Van Halen in his book
It seems like 2024 being the year of drama between the surviving members of Van Halen over the enduring legacy of the late, great Eddie Van Halen was still cooking right until the very end of the year.

This week, it’s the turn of former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar to weigh in, as the Red Rocker started tearing up the comments of a 29 December post on Instagram throwing shade at his former bandmate Alex Van Halen over the latter’s much publicised book, Brothers.
After posting a picture of Hagar and EVH backstage during their pomp with the caption, “Walking to the stage in the good old days. I needed to see this photo today to close out this year,” various commenters started weighing in with some variation of the idea that Van Halen had ended as an interesting band when Hagar replaced David Lee Roth in 1985.
This is an impression that has been furthered by Alex choosing to end Brothers at the culmination of Roth’s time in the band – even though Alex claims that he was shocked by the “vitriol” DLR has towards his brother still. Hagar even claimed that Alex wouldn’t speak to him because of the book at one point.
Despite Hagar claiming that it was on his “bucket list” to bury the hatchet with Alex just a few months ago, it seems that the drummer’s decision to act as if Van Halen was over after 1985 continues to rankle.

“It could have [ended], my friend,” he responded to one commenter. “But instead we went on to sell over 50 million records for [a] No. 1 album [and] sold out every building and stadium in the world for a whole decade. That never happened again.”
He then went on to address Alex Van Halen directly, accusing him of disrespecting the great music that Hagar and Eddie Van Halen made together – with the allusion that his lack of songwriting involvement in this era being the cause.
“Alex is not doing his brother’s musical legacy justice by not acknowledging all the No. 1 albums and some great music Eddie and I wrote together — not Alex — but Eddie and I wrote together,” Hagar continued. “To not acknowledge 10 years of music is blasphemy to his brother’s musicianship, songwriting and legacy.”
Hagar spent much of 2024 putting his own spin on the Van Halen legacy with the Best Of All Worlds tour – a tribute tour that featured Joe Satriani on guitar, the addition of which caused Hagar to remark that he was playing some Van Halen songs better than Van Halen had on their final tour.
