Sammy Hagar claims David Lee Roth “went AWOL” after tour invite: “You know, the guy’s unpredictable”

Fans looking forward to David Lee Roth‘s participation in Sammy Hagar‘s Best of All Worlds tour may be disappointed, as the Red Rocker recently revealed that his Van Halen predecessor has gone “AWOL” after initially expressing interest in joining.

Hagar – known for his tenure as Van Halen’s lead vocalist following Roth’s departure – explains that he’d extended an invitation for the latter to join him when the tour was first announced. Roth showed interest at the start, but after Hagar clarified that the invitation was for him to guest on a song or two rather than participate in the entire tour, Roth reportedly went silent.
“He went AWOL,” Hagar says in a recent appearance on Sirius XM’s Eddie Trunk Podcast. “After [clarifying the offer], he just kind of went to sleep on it, which is fine. I don’t need Roth antagonising me.”
That said, he maintains that the door remains open on a Roth appearance, saying: “If he really wanted to come out and play music, sing a song and be real and not try to pull some crazy whacked out stuff.”
“You know, the guy’s unpredictable. And God bless him, he’s been an entertainer his whole life and he’s a showman and he likes to upstage people and that’s been his game. And so, we’re just not into that.”
Hagar continues, “I would love him to come and sing Jump at the end of this show. Just you come out and sing the fucker instead of me.”
Despite Roth’s absence though, the ongoing Best Of All Worlds tour is likely as close as fans will get to a Van Halen reunion concert. The tour, which gathers Hagar, ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, drummer Jason Bonham, and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani, sees the band performing Van Halen classics from both Roth and Hagar eras.
Elsewhere, Hagar also revealed that he’s invested $1.5 million of his own money into the tour, saying “When you do that, it just brings the level of the whole thing up.”
