Rufus Wainwright shares Joni Mitchell tribute song, Damsel in Distress
Rufus Wainwright has shared the single Damsel in Distress, along with an animated music video. Take a look at the clip above.
Both the song and the video are a tribute to musician Joni Mitchell, as Wainwright explained in a statement about the release: “My husband and I now live in Laurel Canyon,” he said in a statement. “I wasn’t that familiar with Joni’s music but Jörn [Weisbrodt] became obsessed and took me on a journey into her music. We ended up hanging out with her and I get now why she’s one of the greats. So it’s part Laurel Canyon, part a song about a personal relationship that I’m trying to come to terms with, but mostly my Mitchell virginity being broken.”
The single is taken from Wainwright’s upcoming ninth record, Unfollow the Rules. His last record was Take All My Loves, was an adaptation of nine Shakespeare sonnets, and featured a star-studded roster of guests including Helena Bonham Carter, Fiora Cutler, Peter Eyre, Carrie Fisher, Inge Keller, Siân Phillips, Anna Prohaska, William Shatner, Martha Wainwright, and Florence Welch.
Wainwright will also head on a world tour in the spring in support of the record, beginning on 19 April before he heads to Europe on 1 May.
Unfollow the Rules is out 24 April. Find out more over at rufuswainwright.com. For more music news, click here.
