Reverb.com hit by temporary data breach

Online gear marketplace Reverb.com has notified customers that it has been subject to a temporary data breach, noting that the site does not believe that passwords or payment information were included the information leaked.

In an email to users, the Marketplace wrote: “We take our users’ privacy and security very seriously. Out of an abundance of caution, we wanted to inform you that Reverb recently became aware of an issue relating to user contact information.
“At this time, we believe that contact information, including name, address, phone number, and email, was publicly accessible for a short period of time. We do not have reason to believe that any of this information has been misused, nor do we believe that password or payment information were involved.”
The site also noted that as soon as this was flagged, it “immediately worked to resolve it,” and “conducted an investigation of the situation to determine what happened.” The site is “taking steps to prevent something like this from happening again.”
Reverb also encouraged users to change their passwords on a regular basis, something that can be done through its account settings page, and reassured users that “Your trust is important to us, and we are committed to improving our safety procedures to keep your information secure.”
Earlier this year, Reverb announced the closure of Reverb Sites. The service allowed sellers to create a discrete website that was linked to their Reverb storefront, automatically updating with new listings and stock information. In a statement about the closure, Reverb said: “We launched Reverb Sites in 2017 hopeful that it would enable sellers like you to build your brand and your sales through a standalone, Reverb-powered website. As we spent time building and working to improve this service, it ultimately became clear that better, more robust website services already exist.”
The service will shut down this Friday (30 April).
