Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood “seriously ill” and required “emergency hospital treatment” after infection
Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood has been hospitalised with a serious infection that required emergency treatment and a stay in intensive care – resulting in him being forced to cancel all upcoming tour dates with new band, the Smile.

In a statement posted to The Smile’s Instagram, the band revealed that 52-year-old multi-instrumentalist became seriously ill “a few days ago” and required emergency hospital treatment – including a stay in intensive care.
Thankfully, the statement goes on to state that, “mercifully he is now out of danger, and will soon return home”.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the statement also confirmed that the Smile would be cancelling their forthcoming European tour – which was due to kick off in August and included a mix of festival dates and headline appearances – in order for Greenwood to recuperate.

Greenwood formed the Smile with Radiohead bandmate Thom Yorke and drummer Tom Skinner in 2020, and the band have released a pair of studio albums to date – including Wall of Eyes, which was released in January 2024.
Greenwood is one of foremost innovators in modern electric guitar – known for his explosive and aggressive guitar style, and innovative and esoteric use of effects, which Guitar.com once described as an, “exhilarating melange of tremolo-picked soundscapes, chunky octaves, screaming high-register runs and killswitch antics.”
In addition to the Smile, Greenwood has been involved in numerous eclectic musical projects away from Radiohead, including work on numerous film scores, a period as the BBC Concert Orchestra’s composer-in-residence, and recently a project with Israeli artist Dudu Tassa.
