“People argue with me about that all the time” ex-Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland reveals his biggest regret about ‘Peace Sells…’
Ex-Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland says he has one gripe with the band’s 1986 record Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?: he wishes the band had “been more on top of [their] ‘tone game.’”

In an interview with Ultimate Guitar, Poland recalls the early days of thrash metal when the likes of Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth reigned supreme. “Once it caught on, it started a whole avalanche of bands like that. And then all the bands today, a lot of those really heavy bands, they came out of that.”
Poland explains that drummer Gar Samuelson believed he’d find the material “super challenging” but that this meant he would “really like it.” “And I did,” Poland confirms, “It was fun to play. It was challenging. But I just wish we would have been more on top of our ‘tone game’ when we made Peace Sells. But hey, people argue with me about that all the time.”
As Poland elaborates, he eventually concedes during these conversations. “They’re like, ‘No, man, you couldn’t have made that record sound any better,’ they tell me. And I finally just say, ‘Yeah, I guess so.’”
In 2004, Peace Sells was remixed and remastered by Megadeth vocalist Dave Mustaine. “I do like the original,” Poland says, “But I like what Dave did when he remastered and re-recorded everything. I do like that, too.”
Shortly after the original release of Peace Sells, both Poland and Samuelson were asked to leave the band. “Me and Gar had our egos,” explains Poland, “And Dave had his ego, which was the ego that ran everything. And there was this clash.”
Poland has previously spoken about how Mustaine “fired” him. “As far as us being together [now], I mean, maybe if we never drank and did drugs, I don’t know. That shit didn’t help, that’s for sure,” he concludes.
