Noel Gallagher says he’s still trying to “live up” to the success of Oasis’s first two albums

30 years on, Noel Gallagher says he’s still trying to live up to the success of Oasis’s first two albums, Definitely Maybe and (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?
As the 30th anniversary reissue of Definitely Maybe arrives later this month (30 August), Gallagher reflects on Oasis’s record-breaking debut album and its 1995 follow-up (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? – two releases he claims neither he nor Liam Gallagher have matched up to in the years since.

“We went directly from the last night of the Definitely Maybe tour to record (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, and then spent the following 29 years – and counting – trying to live up to both albums,” Gallagher told the Sunday Times Culture magazine.
The guitarist added that he’d be just as happy had the band released just their debut album.
“I guess it’s the definitive Oasis album,” he said. “It has the spirit, the arrogance of youth. Teenage anthems. It’s live – no bullshit. If we’d made only that album, then I’d still be as happy as I am now.”
“We knew the songs were great because we played them every night and all the shows were outrageous. But at that time it was just a good album — nothing more, nothing less. It’s only through time that it has become what it is now.”
In fact, it is a “mystery” how such a great record was made for the members had no idea what they were doing in the studio at the time.
“In hindsight, we didn’t really know what we were doing,” said Gallagher. “We were trying to ‘make a record’, but none of us had ever done one before. So, we just set the gear up and got into character and pressed record. The rest, as they say, is mystery.”

In the meantime, Noel recently expressed his frustration with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and the latter’s constant badgering for an Oasis reunion.
“I would just like him to wind his fucking neck in about Oasis!” the former Oasis chief said. “I wouldn’t talk to him. I haven’t got time for that fucking mob any more. I haven’t got fuck all to say to him. He’s our kid’s mate anyway.”
