NAMM 2018: Unity Audio reveals new Mini-Rock monitors

The new Mini-2 is the smallest in the company’s active monitor catalogue

Unity Audio introduced its new Mini-Rock 2 active monitor at the 2018 NAMM show.

The Mini-Rock 2 marks the smallest addition to the company’s professional active monitor range measuring 279mm high, 184 mm wide, 256 mm deep, (10.98” high x 7.24” wide x 10.07” deep).

Kevin Walker, Unity Audio MD, commented: I’m absolutely delighted with the new Mini-Rock! It’s blown me away! I am astounded by the overwhelming response to it by NAMM visitors.

“It sounds way bigger then it looks. It’s totally balanced in an un-hyped way. A custom input/crossover has been designed providing a rear panel volume control. The Class D power supply provides switchable 115v-230v operation. The stereo imaging, staging and placement are outstanding, with 3D like quality to the ambience and reverb tails.”

The Mini-Rock shares the same 50 kHz folded ribbon tweeter that is used in the larger Rock and the three-way Boulder but features a new crystal membrane woofer measuring 150mm (5-3/4”). The crystal-shaped inverse aluminium dome is joined to a paper cone in a ‘special gluing process to result in the desired sandwich construction’.

The crystal cone aluminium-foil stamping is deigned to stiffen the aluminium dome, minimising resonances and reducing coloration, while improving power handling and dynamics. Furthermore, the voice coil design of the woofer offers an expanded range of the respective drivers by nearly an octave. The Mini-Rock also uses two 180W Class D amplifiers, one per drive unit, which also includes DC protection.

The Mini-Rock is the first monitor in the range, with the exception of the Avalanche sub-woofer, that uses a split dual-chamber cabinet with an Aperiodic Vent. This is intended to deliver the benefits of a sealed cabinet, such as zero port noise and fast, accurate bass reproduction. It also comes with mounting points for third party yokes and brackets for the installation market.
