“My breaking point resulted in inexcusable behaviour”: Perry Farrell apologises to Dave Navarro for onstage outburst

Perry Farrell has apologised to Dave Navarro following their altercation at one of their Jane’s Addiction shows last week, which led to the band cancelling the rest of their tour.
In fan-filmed footage from their show in Boston on Friday (13 September), the frontman shoves into Navarro during his Ocean Size solo, while he also says “fuck you” to the guitarist before attempting to punch him. The punch is intercepted by guitar tech Dan Cleary before members of their team rush on stage to restrain and remove Farrell.

In additional footage from a fan, Farrell is heard saying “fuck these motherfuckers” to his bandmates before the altercation with Navarro. In the aftermath of the attack, the remaining three members all raise their hands and clap to the audience, while drummer Stephen Perkins gives Navarro a quick hug.
Jane’s Addiction then cancelled their show in Bridgeport two days later, and confirmed in an official statement that the rest of the tour has been cancelled too, the four-piece going on an immediate hiatus.

Now, Farrell has apologised on his Instagram story, writing, “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologise to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show.
“Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behaviour, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”

Navarro shared a post of his own, featuring himself on stage with the caption “Goodnight”. And he, Avery and Perkins have explained that Farrell’s “mental health difficulties” were the reason for the band’s hiatus. They say: “Due to a continuing pattern of behaviour and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour. Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs.”
They explain that there’s no other solution that would “ensure a safe environment on stage” and finish: “Our hearts are broken. Dave, Eric and Stephen.”

Jane’s Addiction last reformed in 2008, but this year marks the first time the original foursome of Farrell, Navarro, Perkins and bassist Eric Avery performed together since 2010, the year Avery left. At their show at Bush Hall, London, on May 23, they played their first new material together as the original quartet in 34 years, and in July released the single Immediate Redemption.
