The group’s existence was announced via the Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ Instagram account, which has largely served as Barrett’s personal social media platform since the group disbanded last year with no official reason given. The other members of The Defiant, the post reveals, are former Offspring drummer Pete Parada, ex-Smash Mouth guitarist Greg Camp, Joey LaRocca of the Briggs, and former Street Dogs bassist Johnny Rioux.
Parada was ejected from the Offspring for his anti-vax conspiracy theory peddling, while Camp and Briggs have previously been criticised for their ties to Scientology, with Camp having previously participated in a COVID prevention campaign from the Church of Scientology.
Rioux has been less prominent in his views, only recently sharing a screenshot of a pro-vaccine article on his Instagram accompanied by a rant that claimed the vaccine would have “some adverse and serious effects to some children.”
Music-wise, the group have shared snippets of the tracks No Nothing and Everyone Loves Me on their Instagram, which so far presents the group as your standard anti-authoritarian punk band with lyrics like “I’m a lost cause, but everybody loves me” and “I’m pushing all your buttons and I’m pulling your leg”.
The Defiant are set to release their debut album later this year, though no date was given for the record’s release.
