Metallica and Sophie Lloyd among rock artists donating to LA wildfire relief efforts
Since they began on 7 January, the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires have caused unimaginable destruction and devastation, claiming the lives of at least 24 people, and destroying thousands of homes and buildings.
The Guardian reports that the fires are forecast to be the costliest in US history, with over $200 billion worth of damage estimated.

Now, a number of prominent artists in the rock community have begun donating or pledging to raise money to help relief efforts.
Metal legends Metallica announced yesterday (13 January) that, through their All Within My Hands Foundation, have donated $500,000 to relief efforts, with the money being split between two organisations: the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Recovery Fund and the Pasadena Community Foundation’s Eaton Canyon Fire Relief and Recovery Fund.
“In the past week, the community has suffered at least 24 lives lost, nearly 100,000 people under evacuation orders, 40,000 acres burned, and more than 12,000 structures – commercial and residential – destroyed,” the band wrote. “However, numbers cannot articulate the magnitude of anguish as the disaster upends families and dismantles livelihoods.”

Elsewhere, social media sensation and MGK guitarist Sophie Lloyd has confirmed she’s going ahead with her upcoming show at the Whiskey A Go Go on the Sunset Strip on 16 January, with money raised donated to wildfire relief efforts.
As she writes in a new Instagram post, “a portion of the proceeds from the merchandise sold at the gig” will be donated to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, as well as $5 from every remaining ticket sold.
She is also auctioning off one of her signature Kiesel Guitars to raise funds for Pasadena Humane – an animal shelter that is currently housing and providing support for over 400 animals affected by the fires.
“Like most of the world, I have watched, with horror, the fires ravaging LA over the last week,” she writes. “We have witnessed unprecedented destruction across a city so beloved by so many…
“Things are changing very quickly, but at this time, we have decided to go forward with the show. Everything will go ahead as planned including all the VIP experiences. Safety is our first priority so we will continue to monitor the situation and update you if there are any changes.
“The show will go ahead, if nothing else to recognise the resilience of the people of LA and maybe provide a small distraction to the pain people may be feeling, while trying to help in whatever small way I can.”
