Marty Friedman was “too short” to audition for Kiss: “I had everything else, I was so upset”
Marty Friedman has confirmed a rather bizarre rumour – he couldn’t audition for Kiss as he “was too short”.
Apparently, his height wasn’t the only requirement Friedman was questioned on when first offered the opportunity, as he was asked about a number of things, from his relationship status to the colour of his hair.

In an interview with Whiplash.net shared on YouTube, Friedman is asked if the rumour about this height ordeal is true (via Ultimate Guitar): “Yes, that’s true. I was too short [he laughs]. I fit the other ones. I fit the other questions good.”
Of the mysterious recruiter, Friedman recalls, “He says, ‘You have long hair?’ Yes. ‘You don’t have any facial hair?’ Correct. ‘You’re single?’ Yes. ‘You’re skinny?’ Yes. ‘Not blonde?’ Yes. I fit all of those things. And then he says, ‘How about your height? Are you six feet tall with no shoes?’ I’m like, ‘Oh shit, not even close.’”
He adds, “They said six feet with no shoes on. I wear high heels, anyway. I had everything else. I was so upset. But what can you do?”
In other, less-weird Friedman news, his latest album Drama allowed for him to experiment with vintage gear for the first time. Having never understood the hype for old amps and guitars, Friedman feels that having a contrast of modern and vintage gear in his arsenal when recording led to “a complete, new and beautiful light” to shine through his record.
“I’ve always been a ‘new gear’ type of guy,” he told Guitar World. “I’ve never understood vintage gear; I’ve never had the capacity of knowledge for it, the patience for it or the love of it, for that matter. But on this album, I’m seeing the light a little bit.”
Drama is available now to stream or buy.
