“Many people want to share their experience and why shouldn’t they?”: Fans react to Tobias Forge’s phone ban on upcoming Ghost tour

Ghost’s Tobias Forge recently spoke of a phone ban for their upcoming 2025 world tour, and fans have since been sharing their opinions online.
The tour will be a “a phone-free experience”, with Forge citing a dynamic of disconnection at live shows. Upon entering the venue, attendees will be required to seal their phones in Yondr pouches, which are designed to unlock when a concert or experience is over. In an emergency, fans can leave the main showroom and unseal the pouch in the lobby and other designated areas.

In the r/guitar subreddit under a Guitar.com news story shared by a Reddit user, fans have been debating whether or not they agree with the ban, as well as suggesting further changes that might help make implementing such bans a smoother experience – with the return of physical tickets rather than electronic ones making it easier to keep phones turned off.
“If you have ten thousand people at a concert and eight thousand of them are holding a phone, there’s something deeply disconnected”: Tobias Forge on why Ghost’s tour will ban phones byu/_szs inGuitar

One user states, “I don’t mind not being able to use your phone. I’ve been to a few concerts, including Ghost, where you had to put them in a locking pouch during the show. What I really don’t care for is the fact that these pouches are rather large and won’t fit in your pocket. So now you have to carry this useless thing around with you during the whole show.
“You could just leave the phone in your car… but the stupid tickets are on an app,” they add. “I think for no-phone shows they should have hard ticket options rather than using an app.”
Another also adds, “Tool had a ban on phones at their shows near me, and near the end Maynard told the fans since they’d been so good they could all pull out their phones and shine lights and take pictures. I think having a designated time for these things is the way to go.”
One fan also suggested that if bands released an official live recording from their gigs, it would also help to prevent people from filming. “Most people just want a memory of an event they’ve been to,” they state.
On the whole, it seems most gig-goers are willing to put their phones away. With that said however, some feel such orders are unfair given how much fans are paying for a ticket. One person says, “Many people want to share their experience and why shouldn’t they? As guitar players how many times have you looked to live videos for help when trying to figure out a song?
“And people rely on their phones. You may be on call for your job, have childcare concerns or many reasons why you need to be contactable. Plus, don’t forget lots of people in the audience may not be fans. They are just there with their friends or kids etc.”
Tickets for the Ghost Skeletour are on sale now. Shows kick off in April.
