Lzzy Hale once dumped a date for falling asleep at a Tool gig: “Total deal-breaker for me”
Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale once had a rather bad date at a Tool gig, and by bad we mean her date managed to fall asleep.
Hale had saved up money from a waitress job to go to the gig, which was at Hersheypark Arena in Pennsylvania, as the band were touring following the release of their 2001 album, Lateralus. Any gig would be a bizarre place to get some shut eye, but at a rather loud Tool show is even more bogus.

In an interview on the 10 records that changed her life for Guitar Player, Hale recalls how originally, she was supposed to take her younger brother Arejay to the show instead, who was “getting really good on the drums”: “He had learned Tool’s song Schism from the radio, so I thought that I should get him the whole album for his birthday. We just devoured it. I ended up getting really into it myself. Listening to their music was just like watching a horror film,” she says.
“I had a shitty waitress job, and I got us tickets to see Tool at Hersheypark. I was so stoked. Then Arejay did something to piss off our parents, so they wouldn’t allow him to go. I thought, Okay, this could be an opportunity to ask somebody out on a date, which I did.
“I asked this guy Nate, and he said yes. I was like, Sweet! We didn’t have great seats, but it didn’t matter – the show was amazing. I was singing every word. Halfway through, I looked at my date and saw that he had fallen asleep – total deal-breaker for me. So in a weird way, Tool’s Lateralus was a life-changer. My brother still teases me about it: ‘I wouldn’t have fallen asleep,’” she shares.
Halestorm are on tour now. The band released a live album recorded at London’s Wembley Arena last May, which you can stream now.
