Johnny Marr’s got another quirky signature guitar – this time a seven-string Martin acoustic
Johnny Marr has become known for masterminding some slightly eccentric guitars, such as the Fender ‘Spirit Strat’ he debuted in 2021 that had a ridiculous nine pick-ups. His new acoustic Martin is no different – for one thing, it’s got seven strings.

Marr’s taken the guitar out on the road over the last few weeks, fuelling speculation that a similarly quirky new signature was on the way. Now, said guitar has been identified as his new signature Martin M-7, with an octave G string to deliver his signature jangle.
The former Smiths guitarist has also put his name to the standard six-string M-6. Both instruments have mahogany necks with a “unique feel” created by a slightly thinner nut width. While the guitars are as wide as a Jumbo guitar, they also have the thickness of a regular 000.
In addition, they feature a spruce top, East Indian rosewood back and sides, an ebony fingerboard with 20 frets and an ebony bridge. Under the hood, there is a scalloped X Brace pattern and LR Baggs Anthem electronics.
Although the M-7 has an extra string, it only has six bridge pins. The two G strings share one pin in order to avoid needing to significantly widen the fretboard.
“I’ve now got my own signature guitar that makes me sound like in the studio when I’ve put this really great old compressor on it with a great mic and a little hint of the high string in there,” says Marr.
“All of these things that I do on record using a few guitars, I’ve got it all in the one guitar that I can carry around with me, and if I go play with a pal or go and guest with someone, I sound like me.”
Marr has an extensive history with Martin – he’s had a D-28 in his arsenal for a long time and used his 1971 model on Smiths hits including There Is a Light That Never Goes Out and Cemetery Gates.
The Martin M-6 and M-7 models are available now for $4,999 each – find out more at martinguitar.com.
