John Mayer plans to play Dead & Company shows with just three fingers after injuring his fretting hand index finger

John Mayer revealed that his left index finger will be “out of commission” for Dead & Company’s upcoming residency shows at the Las Vegas sphere due to a recent injury.
Sharing a picture of his bandaged digit on Instagram, the Your Body Is a Wonderland singer says that an accident involving a truck door has rendered one of the fingers on his fretting hand temporarily unusable.

“Last Thursday I injured my left index finger (truck door), and the first thing that went through my mind was ‘I really need that finger in a week,’” Mayer explains. “I need all my fingers, but the left index is the team captain of my fretting hand. It will heal just fine, but will be out of commission for a while.”
Despite the setback, guitarist says he’s been practising guitar using his other three fingers and feels confident about his playing. He also apologises to fans for “screwing up the equipment”, so to speak.
“I have spent every day practising guitar using the other three fingers and I think I have it sounding pretty good!” Mayer writes. “I’ve always felt like every part of me belongs to these shows, and it’s my responsibility to return to the stage each night without screwing up the equipment, and I’m sorry for the misadventure here. The power of the music and the love for these shows will prevail! See ya tonight.”

Dead & Company is scheduled to perform six more shows at the Las Vegas venue from 1-3 August and 8-10 August.
Speaking to LA Times about his experience performing at the city’s most expensive entertainment venue ever built, Mayer notes how the Sphere has “established overnight a new big league” of live bands who have the vision and the budget to fully take advantage of the venue’s unique immersive audio and visual capabilities.
“I think what we all love is that there’s finally once again a live-music space race,” he says. “There’s the social-media space race, the podcast space race, the AI [artificial intelligence] space race. But live music pretty much stayed the same for such a long time.”
