John Mayer busts out rare double-neck acoustic for his solo arena tour
John Mayer kicked off his first-ever acoustic solo arena tour last weekend, bringing out what appears to be a one-of-a-kind Tim Teel-built Martin acoustic.

Mayer pulled out the unique guitar at the first show of his tour on Saturday 11 March 2023 in Newark, New Jersey, for the track Edge of Desire from his 2009 album, Battle Studies. The Tim Teel-built Martin acoustic, which was first debuted at NAMM 2010, features both six-string and 12-string fretboards, with a shared soundhole, shared bridge and pearloid inlays.
While it hasn’t been officially confirmed that the Tim Teel custom is the guitar used by Mayer on this tour, the guitar can be clearly seen and heard in fan footage posted on YouTube. Watch the video, as well as a breakdown of the Tim Teel custom from NAMM 2010, below.
Also seen at the first concert of Mayer’s solo arena tour was his Fender Jimi Hendrix Monterey Stratocaster, a call back to the brand he was associated with before his shock exit from the manufacturer in 2014. He debuted a new song titled Driftin’ at the show, opting for a standard six-string Martin guitar with a capo for the performance. Listen to the track below.
