Joe Bonamassa speaks out after being snubbed by the Grammys yet again: “0 for 5 baby! At least I am 0 for something”

Despite being nominated for four Grammys throughout his career, blues legend Joe Bonamassa has lost out yet again. Blues Deluxe Vol. 2 lost out on the Best Contemporary Blues Album award at this year’s Grammys, with Ruthie Foster’s Mileage coming out on top.
Bonamassa, however, is in high spirits. He’s taken to Instagram to reflect on his loss, and is ultimately thankful to have still left his stamp on the evening with his slick live performance of Twenty-Four Hour Blues.

With a Cuban cigar in his mouth, Smokin’ Joe Bonamassa thanked the Grammys for the opportunity to perform. “Thank you to the Academy for inviting me to play 24 Hour Blues with that killer band!,” he writes.

He’s also taking his defeat on the chin, turning his consistent loss streak into a celebration. He even jokingly hopes that nomination number 5 welcomes yet another defeat.  “Grammy after party on the streets of downtown LA with Josh Smith, King of Snacks, and a Cuban cigar,” he says. “0 for 5 baby!! At least I am 0 for something!”
His post also pays respect to Ruthie Foster, noting that her triumph with Mileage was “well deserved.”

Of his previous nominations, Bonamassa has only been in the running for Best Contemporary Blues Album once before. His 2022 album, Royal Tea, was deemed a potential winner – but lost out to Edgar Winters’s Brother Johnny. His other two nominations have been Best Traditional Blues Album for 2017’s Live at the Greek Theatre, and his 2013 collaborative album with Beth Hart, Seesaw, was up for Best Blues Album.
Although Bonamassa didn’t take home the bacon, his fans are showering him with praise. The comments on Bonamassa’s post are overwhelmingly positive. “Great performance!,” one fan writes. “The Grammy Award will eventually come! You are the best guitar player out there!”
“Maybe you didn’t win, but you sell out just about every venue you play,” another fan notes. “That’s a measure of success most artists never achieve. Kudos to you…”
Elsewhere, Taj Mahal Sextet won Best Traditional Blues Album with Swingin’ Live at The Church in Tulsa.
Also at the Grammys, French metal band Gojira scored their first-ever award for their groundbreaking performance of Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira!) during last year’s Paris Olympics opening ceremony. They beat out Metallica’s Screaming Suicide, Judas Priest’s Crown of Horns, Spiritbox’s Cellar Door and Knocked Loose’s collab with Poppy, Suffocate.
