“It’s a funny feeling to feel like you’re being written about, and maybe the whole picture’s not being expressed”: John Mayer and Shawn Mendes discuss having songs written about them by famous exes

John Mayer and Shawn Mendes have bonded over having songs written about them by famous exes.
Mendes recently guest starred on How’s Life With John Mayer on SiriusXM, where he and Mayer got to discussing the unusual phenomenon of a song being out in the world that’s about them. Mayer famously dated Katy Perry and Taylor Swift in the past, while Mendes has had relationships with Camila Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter.

It is believed that Swift’s 2010 hit Dear John is about Mayer. More recently, Mendes was rumoured to be the inspiration for Cabello’s June Gloom and Carpenter’s songs Sharpest Tool and Taste.
“No one’s gonna understand,” Mayer says, though he acknowledges that he and Mendes are “handsomely rewarded for the stuff we have to deal with.”
“You and I are both talking as people who’ve heard songs that – at least other people are saying – are references to us.”

Mendes was in agreement. “It sucks to feel like … It’s a funny feeling to feel like you’re being written about, and maybe the whole picture’s not being expressed.” The pair agreed that it’s not the usual sort of thing to bring up on the therapist’s couch, so it can be quite a lonely experience.
“You talk to a therapist and go, ‘You ever seen your ex-girlfriend on a billboard before?’” jokes Mayer. “‘Let me tell you, it’s a weird two weeks.’”
Nonetheless, Mendes says the fear of that happening again isn’t enough to stop him potentially falling in love with another musician.
“The suffering that is from hearing a song talking about you in a way you don’t want to be talked about is not even close to the beauty of falling in love with someone for the first time,” he says. “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is no one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone.”
It’s not the first time the two have had a deep conversation over life in music. In October, they came together to discuss the pressures of touring.
