“It’s a business, a Walt Disney f**king dream world”: Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie says there’s no rebellion in rock music
Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie believes modern rock music lacks rebellion, and that it has become like “a business”.
He’s not the only artist who believes that rock lacks guts either, with musicians such as Fontaines D.C.’s Carlos O’Connell suggesting that modern rock has become too “humble” and “apologetic”, which “gets in the way of the music”.

In a 50 questions interview with AnOther, Gillespie says, “There’s no rebellion in rock music anymore. It’s a business, a Walt Disney fucking dream world. Just another part of the entertainment industrial complex. But there are still a few good people kicking against the pricks out there.”
Gillespie goes on to name The Pretenders as a band that recently excited him, and celebrates Chrissie Hynde as “a street punk chanteuse.” Later asked what the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll means to him, he responds, “Sid Vicious on stage in Texas with a bloody nose and ‘gimme a fix’ carved into his chest, swinging his bass guitar into the face of a heckler while shouting ‘All cowboys are f****ts!’. You don’t see that anymore.”
Despite Gillespie’s beliefs about rock, there are also a number of both rising and established musicians who believe it’s still as potent and kicking as ever, from Dave Grohl – who sees the evolving future of rock being safe in the hands of artists like Wet Leg and Billie Eilish – to Yungblud, who after creating his own budget rock festival last August, shared his belief that “rock ‘n’ roll feels different” and that it’s “definitely coming back”.
Primal Scream released their 12th studio album Come Ahead earlier this November. You can buy or stream it now. They’re due to begin touring in April 2025, and tickets are still available.
