“It was so f**king expressive”: How Jerry Cantrell was inspired by Jeff Beck to use a rare pedal

Jerry Cantrell was inspired to use a rare guitar pedal on his new record after watching a clip of Jeff Beck put one to use.
Cantrell released his latest and fourth solo album I Want Blood back in October last year, and though a number of familiar pedals are used throughout, he also decided to use The Bag from Kustom Electronics on two tracks, thanks to inspiration from Beck.

The unusual bit of gear was launched in the late 1960s, and resembled a miniature a bagpipe mixed with a talk box. In use, The Bag would be worn over a player’s shoulder, with a tube running to the player’s mouth. Beck used the peculiar kit on his Blow By Blow album, specifically for his cover of The Beatles’ She’s A Woman.

Speaking to Guitar World, Cantrell says of the gear used on his album, “There is a lot of [Dunlop’s] Cry Baby and talk box on this record. We went heavy with those. We used two different kinds of talk boxes on Vilified and Throw Me a Line. One is the Dunlop that I’ve been using forever, which is just the box on the floor and the tube coming up to the mic.”
On discovering The Bag, Cantrell recalls, “While we were messing around with talk boxes one day, Joe [Barresi, producer] showed me a clip of Jeff Beck with a Kustom The Bag on. It was a different feel, but it was so fucking expressive. I had never seen that clip of Jeff Beck before, and then Joe was like, ‘I’ve got one of these, man. We should try this!’ So he whipped that thing out. I believe The Bag is what you’re hearing on Vilified and Throw Me a Line.”

Jerry Cantrell’s I Want Blood is out now. You can catch him on tour this year.
