“It was so carnal and out of control”: Dave Mustaine on the most “bizarre and disgusting” gig he ever saw

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine recalls going to a pretty messy gig at the iconic Cuckoo’s Nest punk club in California, where things got “carnal and out of control”.
On the digital version of Megadeth’s latest record, The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!, the band covers the Dead Kennedys song Police Truck. The cover marks one of multiple punk songs done by Mustaine and co. over the years, as the band have previously put their own spin on classics from the Sex Pistols too.

Talking about his “punk blood” in an interview with the Phoenix New Times, Mustaine states, “Oh, yeah! Jello [Biafra, Dead Kennedys vocalist] and I, Lee Ving [guitarist, Fear], too, we’re friends. They’re real punk people. They’re not like some fashion haircut.
“I remember going to the Cuckoo’s Nest and seeing Fear. I had never seen anything so bizarre and disgusting in my life. Once the first song started, there was spit fucking everywhere. It was so carnal and out of control. The horsepower that was in the room was inebriating and I loved it,” he remembers.

Despite his admiration for the punk genre, Mustaine remains as a thrash man at his core. Back in June, the vocalist and guitarist said, “If we started doing music that wasn’t heavy and it wasn’t thrash, I would probably not want to do it anymore.”
“Thrash metal music is one of those things that makes you feel alive inside,” he told Rock Hard Greece. “I can’t remember anything that I’ve ever experienced that makes me feel as good as thrash metal – not a drug, not a drink, not a person, not a thing.”
Megadeth are currently touring through the US. Tickets are available now via the band’s official website.
